Over the last 17 years of running and owning a business, learning how to hire better and faster has been critical to our success.

When starting, it’s natural to hire people within your domain of expertise – you might be doing the same. Working within this knowledge base, you can quickly determine the suitability and capability of any potential applicants. The problems begin when you recruit people outside your core expertise.

As our company grew, we began to hire more and more people further away from our core skills which led to poor recruitment outcomes. This problem was compounded as not only were we hiring more people, but these people were higher-paid individuals. This meant each mistake was more costly and began to set back growth.

Over a period of 18 months, we turned to multiple recruiters and spent close to $100,000 in fees. The candidates delivered to us were average to poor, and the results were no more reliable than our own experiences. Although some were great people, they were wrong for the role or the business (at times, candidates were charlatans).

Our single worst recruitment via a specialised agency onboarded a team member with a starting salary of $150,000… who lasted less than 10 weeks. Morale deteriorated so quickly that there were literal fistfights on our factory floor.

  • “Sometimes it can be like throwing darts at a dartboard”
  • “It’s a difficult labour market, sometimes you just have to settle”

  • “I think better reference checks will help” (An irony as the agency is responsible for reference checks)
  • “You need to understand and work with the potential applicant for a longer period, maybe try an extended 3 – 4 hour work interview”
